Some women who are interested in breast augmentation are hesitant to schedule surgery out of concern that the results may look “unnatural.” However, through discussion and planning, more natural breast augmentation results are often attainable. Implant Size
The implant is a significant factor in determining how realistic a woman’s breasts look. This begins with the implant size. Most women who are considered to have had an “obvious” augmentation have breasts that are disproportionately large, relative to their frame. While some women opt for larger implants, women who select more moderately sized implants that make their breasts appear proportionate (or slightly large for their frame) tend to appear more natural.
Implant Shape
Today, round, smooth-surface implants are commonly used. While these implants are not shaped, a variety of volumes and projections are available. Customizing implant size and projection can improve the natural quality of the result.
Implant Placement
Implants can be placed in front of or behind the pectoral muscle. Dr. Orringer typically places the implants partially behind the muscle, as this often produces a more natural appearing result. In addition, the muscle cover may better hide implant imperfections, such as rippling, better by providing more tissue coverage. The partially subpectoral implant is not only often less visible, but also may be less susceptible to issues such as capsular contracture (hardening of scar tissue around the implant).
Implant Type
Breast implants are typically filled with either silicone gel or saline (salt-water). Silicone gel implants tend to look and feel the most natural due to their consistency. Most patients currently opt for this choice. Saline implants have the advantage of being filled with an inherently safe, natural solution. However, the consistency of saline tends to result in more visible rippling of the implant and a somewhat less natural appearance and feel. Dr. Orringer may achieve an aesthetic outcome with either option, depending upon patient preference and individual considerations.
