The development of facial wrinkles is an inevitable part of the aging process. But many people don't realize that the everyday facial expressions they make contribute to wrinkle formation. In fact, one of the most common causes of wrinkles is the muscle contractions that occur when your face performs actions such as smiling, frowning, laughing, and squinting.
The good news is that there are minimally invasive, nonsurgical treatments that will help you temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles formed by facial muscle contractions. One of the most effective treatment options to address this issue is BOTOX® Cosmetic.
You can receive individualized skin rejuvenation recommendations and find out whether BOTOX® Cosmetic is right for you by speaking with Dr. Jay Orringer in person. Please contact our Beverly Hills office to schedule a BOTOX® Cosmetic consultation.
How BOTOX® Cosmetic Works
The active ingredient in BOTOX® Cosmetic is a neurotoxin that temporarily blocks the nerve impulses responsible for the contraction of facial muscles. As a result, these muscles relax, allowing the lines caused by their frequent use to become smoother.
Keep in mind that BOTOX® Cosmetic is only effective at treating wrinkles caused by facial muscle contractions. These include:
- Horizontal forehead wrinkles
- Crow's feet (lines around the eyes)
- Vertical lines between the eyebrows
If you're looking to treat wrinkles caused by lost facial volume, then dermal fillers may potentially provide you with more effective results.
Your BOTOX® Cosmetic Procedure
Dr. Orringer can administer your BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment in one short visit to our Beverly Hills plastic surgery office. The procedure typically takes about 20 minutes to complete. During your procedure, Dr. Orringer will inject BOTOX® Cosmetic into targeted treatment regions in order to get the muscles in these areas to relax.
There is typically no downtime from the procedure, and you can resume normal activities right away. The results achieved using BOTOX® Cosmetic are temporary and typically last about 3-4 months. To maintain your results for a longer period of time, additional treatments are necessary.
BOTOX FAQs
How does BOTOX work?
BOTOX is a neuromodulator derived from botulinum toxin type A. It is injected in small, controlled doses to temporarily reduce the activity of specific facial muscles. This process may help soften the appearance of dynamic lines, such as those caused by frowning, squinting, or raising the eyebrows, while maintaining natural facial expression when administered conservatively.
Which areas are most commonly treated with BOTOX?
Common treatment areas include horizontal forehead lines, vertical lines between the brows (often called “11s”), and crow’s feet around the eyes. In some patients, BOTOX may also be used to address chin dimpling, fine lines around the lips, or visible neck bands. Dr. Orringer tailors treatment plans based on each patient’s facial anatomy and the location of active lines.
Will I look frozen or unnatural after BOTOX?
When performed by an experienced provider using a conservative approach, BOTOX treatment is intended to soften lines without excessively altering the patient’s natural expression. Dr. Orringer emphasizes balance in his injectable treatments to avoid an overtreated appearance.
How long do BOTOX results last?
Most patients begin to see improvement within several days, with full effect typically visible within one to two weeks. Results generally last between three to four months, though duration may vary depending on treatment area, dosage, and individual response.
Can I return to normal activity after my appointment?
Yes, most patients resume non-strenuous activities immediately after treatment. However, our team recommends avoiding heavy exercise, lying flat, or manipulating the treated area for several hours.
Can men benefit from BOTOX?
Yes. BOTOX is frequently performed on male patients, though dosage and injection points may be adjusted to preserve masculine facial features. Dr. Orringer customizes every treatment to align with the patient’s facial structure and desired level of correction.
What happens if I decide to stop BOTOX treatments?
If BOTOX treatments are discontinued, the muscles that were previously relaxed will gradually regain full activity over the course of several months. As muscle function returns, dynamic lines (those caused by repeated facial movements) may begin to reappear. Patients are not committed to long-term use and may choose to stop at any time.
Is BOTOX different from dermal fillers?
Yes. BOTOX is a neuromodulator that temporarily reduces muscle activity in targeted areas. It is most effective for softening dynamic wrinkles—those that form with facial expression, such as frown lines or crow’s feet. By contrast, dermal fillers restore volume in areas where the skin or soft tissue has thinned with age. Fillers can be used to contour the cheeks, soften nasolabial folds, add structure to the jawline, or refine lip shape. In some patients, both may be recommended to address different concerns and support facial harmony.
