There are few, if any, experiences in life more rewarding than motherhood. However, pregnancy often takes a toll on particularly the appearance of the breasts and abdominal wall. It may also affect abdominal strength. These changes tend to worsen with each pregnancy.
Breastfeeding, while a wonderful aspect of motherhood, can also negatively impact the appearance of your breasts. In addition, the daily demands of motherhood often lead to sacrifice of exercise, nutrition, sleep, and many other things in order to put your children first. While these sacrifices are without a doubt worthwhile, there may come a point in time when you decide that that your appearance and fitness are again an important priority. You may then take steps to restore an appearance that is closer to that which you had prior to having children and in some instances better.
Dr. Jay Orringer can perform a customized mommy makeover to potentially reverse many of the changes in your appearance caused by motherhood that you may not like. Since these procedures are individualized to address your unique concerns and goals, the best way to learn about your options is to speak with Dr. Orringer in person.

What Is a Mommy Makeover?
Dr. Orringer takes an individualized approach to all mommy makeovers. Depending upon your unique concerns and goals, he may recommend one or more of the following procedures in order to potentially restore a pleasing appearance that more closely resembles that what which you had prior to having children:
Breast augmentation is intended to restore lost volume to your breasts during a mommy makeover. Most women experience a moderate to significant loss of volume in their breasts following pregnancy and breastfeeding. You may notice that your breasts appear to droop or sag or look disproportionate after becoming a mother.
With breast augmentation, you have a variety of options to help you achieve an appearance that more closely resembles your pre-baby body. You may even choose to enlarge the size of your breasts to more closely resemble the fuller appearance that pregnancy and breastfeeding provided.
In consultation with Dr. Orringer you can discuss your goals for breast augmentation and which options may help you best achieve your personal body goals. During your consultation, you can discuss such options as:
- Implant type, such as saline, more traditional silicone, or gummy bear
- Location for implant placement
- Incision placement options
A breast lift is intended to address sagging of the breast that many women experience after becoming a mother. The procedure can raise the nipple position, which may have fallen lower due to loss of breast tissue and skin elasticity after childbirth. In addition, it decreases excess skin of the breast that contributes to a droopier appearance.
In order to increase upper and overall breast volume, many women choose to combine breast lift with breast augmentation. This combination may further improve the appearance of the “deflated” breast.
A tummy tuck is the first procedure that most of our mommy makeover patients ask about. The abdomen is often the most affected by childbearing. After welcoming your little one into the world, you may be left with loose skin, excess fat deposits, and laxity of the abdominal muscles that do not seem to respond to the most rigorous exercise and diet routines.
One of the effects of pregnancy is often a separation of abdominal muscles as the baby grows outward. For many women this can only be repaired through surgery. With a tummy tuck, excess skin and fat is removed and the separated muscles are brought back together. Then you will likely be able to more fully enjoy the results of your post-pregnancy fitness routine.
Liposuction is intended to aid in the restoration of your body contours. Many women are left with excess fat deposits in the abdomen, back, or thighs. While liposuction is not a weight loss technique for new mothers, it has the potential to create the less rounded body contours that you may have been used to seeing in the mirror before your pregnancy.
Liposuction is often combined with tummy tuck to produce more dramatic body contouring results for our mommy makeover patients.
Am I a Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?
Ideal mommy makeover candidates are women who:
- Are in good overall health
- Have reasonable expectations for the outcome of their procedure
- Are no longer breastfeeding
- Are not too far from their ideal body weight
- Would like to restore a more youthful, fit appearance that is closer to that enjoyed prior to pregnancy and childbirth
There is no ideal age for a mommy makeover. The right time to undergo the procedure depends on when you feel ready to make this investment in your appearance. Some women choose to undergo a mommy makeover shortly after they are done having children, while others prefer to wait until their children are a little older. Either way, you can potentially achieve pleasing results with your mommy makeover.
While the desire to have more children in the future won't rule you out as a mommy makeover candidate, future pregnancies tend to have a negative impact on your results. For this reason, you may want to wait until you are done having children to undergo the procedure.
What Is Recovery Like for a Mommy Makeover?
Mommy makeover recovery times vary widely based on the combination of procedures that you choose in consultation with Dr. Orringer.
Many patients, even those who choose to undergo tummy tucks or breast augmentations, may return to light desk work or similar activities within 1-2 weeks following surgery; although some patients may need a longer period of recuperation.
Restrictions on strenuous activity, such as exercise or lifting certain amounts of weight typically vary from 4-6 weeks depending upon the nature of the procedure and the exercise.
Dr. Orringer will provide detailed pre- and post-operative instructions to follow, and will discuss the recovery period during your consultation.
