Few experiences in life are more exciting and rewarding than motherhood. However, pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding can take a toll on your body. You may have cosmetic and functional issues that are difficult to reverse on your own, especially when the daily demands of motherhood often lead you to sacrifice exercise, nutrition, and sleep.
You aren’t alone. Many women in Beverly Hills experience unwanted post-partum changes to their breasts, abdominal region, and other parts of the body. If you are looking to restore an appearance that is closer to or possibly better than what you had prior to having children, a mommy makeover may be beneficial.
Double-board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Jay Orringer, can perform a customized mommy makeover to potentially reverse many of the undesired physical changes caused by childbirth. To learn more and receive treatment recommendations, please contact us to schedule an individualized consultation. We serve patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Hollywood, California, as well as nationally and internationally.

What is a Mommy Makeover?
A mommy makeover is a combination of plastic surgery procedures performed to potentially help restore or improve your pre-baby figure. It commonly includes breast and body procedures.
However, a mommy makeover requires a personalized surgical plan. Dr. Orringer understands that new mothers don’t always have the same cosmetic concerns. Some may be dealing with changes to their breasts and tummy, while others may be concerned with abdominal skin excess, muscle laxity, and stubborn fatty deposits on their body.
You have unique concerns. Dr. Orringer will tailor your mommy makeover with those goals in mind.
A customized mommy makeover may accomplish many things, such as:
- Restoring lost breast volume
- Adding breast volume that was never present
- Improving sagging breasts
- Elevating nipples that point downward
- Removing stubborn pockets of excess fat
- Eliminating loose, hanging skin on the abdominal region
- Tightening stretched or separated abdominal wall muscles
- Enhancing your curves and body contour
- Improving your confidence and self-image
What is Included in a Mommy Makeover?
Dr. Orringer takes an individualized approach to all mommy makeovers. Depending upon your unique concerns and desired results, he may recommend one or more of the following procedures.
Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is intended to restore lost breast volume during a mommy makeover. Most women experience a moderate to significant loss of volume in their breasts following pregnancy and breastfeeding. You may notice that your breasts appear to droop or sag or have lost their volume after becoming a mother.
With breast augmentation, you have a variety of options to help you achieve an appearance that more closely resembles your pre-baby body. You may even choose to enlarge the size of your breasts to more closely resemble the fuller appearance that pregnancy and breastfeeding provided.
In consultation with Dr. Orringer, you can discuss your personal goals for breast augmentation and which options may help you best achieve them. During your consultation, you can discuss such options as:
- Implant type, such as saline-filled, more traditional silicone, or gummy bear
- Implant size and shape
- Implant position
- Incision options
Breast Lift
A breast lift is intended to address breast sagging, something many women experience after pregnancy and breastfeeding. The procedure can raise the nipple position, which may have fallen due to loss of breast tissue and skin elasticity after childbirth. In addition, a breast lift decreases the excess skin in the area that contributes to a droopier appearance.
In order to increase upper and overall breast volume, many women choose to combine a breast lift with breast augmentation. This combination may further improve the appearance of “deflated” breasts.
Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck is the first procedure that most of our mommy makeover patients ask about. The abdomen is often most affected by childbearing. After welcoming your little one into the world, you may be left with loose skin, abdominal muscle laxity and separation, and excess fat deposits that do not seem to respond to the most rigorous exercise and diet routines.
One of the effects of pregnancy is often a separation of abdominal muscles as the baby grows. For many women, this can only be repaired through surgery. With a tummy tuck, excess skin and fat is removed and the separated muscles are brought back together. After addressing these underlying muscular issues, you will likely be able to more fully enjoy the results of your post-pregnancy fitness routine.
Liposuction
Liposuction is intended to help restore and improve your body contours. A certain degree of weight gain during pregnancy is natural and common. However, many women are left with excess fat deposits on the abdomen, back, or thighs long after giving birth.
While liposuction is not a weight loss technique for new mothers, it has the potential to improve the less cosmetic contours that you may not have been used to seeing in the mirror before your pregnancy. Liposuction is often combined with tummy tuck to produce more optimal body contouring results for our mommy makeover patients.
The Single-Stage Approach
In many cases, a mommy makeover is performed as a single-stage procedure. This means that the procedures that you select in consultation with Dr. Orringer are performed during one surgical operation.
A single-stage mommy makeover offers some advantages over scheduling the same procedures months or years apart. A few notable advantages include:
- Undergoing one recovery instead of multiple
- Potentially addressing each of your concerns at one point in time
- Allowing you to look and feel better as soon as possible
Ideal Mommy Makeover Candidates
Many women have a hard time regaining their figures after having children. In some cases, a healthy lifestyle is not enough to address the physical changes that come with childbirth. This struggle can feel incredibly discouraging and frustrating. If that sounds like your situation, you may be a candidate for a mommy makeover.
It is impossible to say for sure if you are a candidate without speaking to you in person. Dr. Orringer will gladly determine your candidacy during your consultation. In general, ideal mommy makeover candidates are women who:
- Are in good overall health
- Have reasonable expectations for the outcome of their procedure
- Are no longer breastfeeding
- Are not too far from their ideal body weight
- Would like to restore a more youthful, fit appearance
When is the Best Time to Get a Mommy Makeover?
There is no ideal age for a mommy makeover. The right time to undergo the procedure depends on when you feel ready to make this investment in your appearance. Some women choose to undergo a mommy makeover shortly after they are done having children, while others prefer to wait until their children are a little older. Either way, you can potentially achieve pleasing results with your mommy makeover.
While the desire to have more children in the future won't rule you out as a mommy makeover candidate, future pregnancies tend to have a negative impact on your results. For this reason, you may want to wait until you are done having children to undergo the procedure.
What to Expect During Your Initial Consultation
If you are interested in a mommy makeover, the first step is to schedule an individualized private consultation at our modern Beverly Hills practice. During that time, you will meet one-on-one with Dr. Orringer. He will take the time to learn about your unique concerns and what you are hoping to achieve through your mommy makeover.
It is necessary to determine that you are a suitable candidate before proceeding with any surgical procedure. Dr. Orringer will determine this during your consultation, a process that includes a thorough discussion regarding the possible procedures, your health history, and physical examination.
This initial visit is also an excellent opportunity to ask any questions that you may have. Dr. Orringer is aware that you are making a significant decision, and he will work to help you feel well-informed and comfortable before proceeding.
Mommy Makeover Recovery
Mommy makeover recovery times vary widely based on the combination of procedures that you choose after consultation with Dr. Orringer. Although each person is unique, many patients, even those who choose to undergo tummy tucks or breast augmentations, may return to light desk work or similar activities within 1-2 weeks following surgery.
Restrictions on strenuous activity, such as exercise or lifting, typically vary from 4-6 weeks, depending upon the nature of the procedure and the exercise. Dr. Orringer will provide detailed pre-and post-operative instructions to follow and will discuss the recovery period during your consultation.
How Much Does a Mommy Makeover Cost?
The cost of a mommy makeover procedure is determined largely by the procedures involved and the degree of correction required. For that reason, mommy makeover pricing varies between individuals.
At the time of consultation, after determining an individualized plan, procedural costs for your mommy makeover will be discussed with you by Dr. Orringer’s staff.

Mommy Makeover FAQs
How Long Is Mommy Makeover Recovery?
As with any surgical procedure, mommy makeover does require some rest for your body to heal. Healing time will depend upon the combination of particular procedures involved in an individual’s mommy makeover. Many of Dr. Orringer’s patients are able to return to work after one to two weeks, but in addition to the procedure done, this will depend upon the nature of a patient’s job.
Breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck and liposuction are among the procedures most often included as part of a mommy makeover. While the results are usually very pleasing for patients, tummy tuck tends to require the most recovery time.
Be mindful that there are some recommended restrictions with regard to lifting weights and/or vigorous exercise early after your mommy makeover procedure. Dr. Orringer will discuss with you certain exercises and/or activities he believes may help optimize your recovery.
When Can I Pick Up My Child After Mommy Makeover?
Mommy makeover patients often have young children. Dr. Orringer generally recommends that you not lift more than 10 pounds for the first post-operative month, but this will depend upon the individual procedure actually done. You can often hold your child on your lap much earlier if comfortable for you. At your follow-up visits, Dr. Orringer will typically advise progressive activity.
When Should I Have a Mommy Makeover?
Women interested in having a mommy makeover often do so to eliminate unwanted fatty areas, decrease loose abdominal skin and muscle laxity and restore a more pleasing breast contour and size. It is usually recommended that this be performed after you are done having children. Subsequent pregnancies can reverse some of the positive results. Dr. Orringer recommends waiting at least six months after childbirth or several months after stopping breastfeeding to undergo mommy makeover.
How Soon Can I Exercise After a Mommy Makeover?
Dr. Orringer recommends early ambulation and activity after surgery. Walking is encouraged beginning the night of surgery. Exercise activities usually progress from the first to the sixth week, when the more strenuous exercises can typically be resumed. Each individual, however, heals at her own pace and progression of exercise will be discussed with Dr. Orringer.
What Qualifications Might You Look for in Choosing a Surgeon to Perform Your Mommy Makeover?
Dr. Orringer is double board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) and the American Board of Surgery and has more than 30 years of experience performing mommy makeover procedures. Double board-certification means that Dr. Orringer completed accredited residencies and passed rigorous certifying board examinations in both general and plastic surgery specialties. Further, he completed the necessary additional requirements to become a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a member of both the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
