What Liposuction Can and Cannot Accomplish

Liposuction in Beverly Hills

Liposuction is a popular surgery for people seeking a more contoured body shape. While this procedure may be effective for reducing localized areas of fat, it’s important to understand its capabilities and its limitations fully. Setting clear, realistic expectations is one of the goals of consultation with Dr. Jay Orringer, a double board-certified plastic surgeon with 35 years of experience in body contouring procedures.

Foremost, liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure. Instead, it addresses specific areas of excess fat that have proven resistant to healthy eating and regular physical activity. Dr. Orringer approaches each case with an individualized emphasis on contour and proportion, evaluating how even subtle refinements may contribute to overall balance.

What Liposuction May Accomplish

Liposuction may help refine contours in select areas such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, back, or under the chin. The procedure involves the removal of excess fat through small, carefully placed incisions. It may be most beneficial for patients who are near their target weight and seeking focused improvement rather than a dramatic transformation of their body form.

When performed as part of a broader surgical plan (such as in conjunction with a tummy tuck or breast reduction), liposuction may support smoother transitions between treated and untreated areas. For suitable candidates with good skin tone, liposuction may result in an improved silhouette and better-defined contours.

What Liposuction Cannot Address

Liposuction does not address, and can worsen, loose or sagging skin. If a patient’s skin has lost elasticity (due to aging, weight fluctuations, or pregnancy), additional procedures such as abdominoplasty may be recommended to remove excess skin and tighten the underlying tissues. Liposuction also does not tighten muscles or improve the appearance of stretch marks.

Patients with generalized excess weight may not be ideal candidates for liposuction until weight has stabilized. Dr. Orringer believes that planning should be based on achieving a good long-term result, which encompasses healthy lifestyle principles, rather than short-term aesthetic goals. He discusses what liposuction is designed to achieve and how its effects may be best maintained.

A Personalized, Individualized Approach

Each liposuction procedure performed by Dr. Orringer is customized with the patient’s unique anatomy and objectives in mind. Careful attention is given to achieving improved balance and proportion. His surgical approach reflects a philosophy of refinement, not exaggeration.
