Over the years, highly visible signs of aging of the eyes often become visible. If you feel that excess skin and fat of your eyelids have made you look older than you are, then blepharoplasty may be a great option for you.

Benefits of Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery is an effective way to potentially correct signs of aging around your eyes. Some potential benefits you may experience from your procedure include:

  • Reduction in excess skin of the eyelids
  • A more alert and open appearance of the eyes

Reduction in fatty “bags” of the lower eyelids and excess fat of the upper eyelids It’s also common for droopy eyelids to obscure your visual field, impacting your ability to see. If you experience this, blepharoplasty may also have the potential benefit of improving your vision fields by removing this obstruction.

Am I a Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

You may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery if you would like to correct:

  • Redundancy, wrinkling or sagging of your eyelid skin
  • Vision problems caused by excess upper eyelid skin and fat that partially blocks your visual field
  • Lost or hidden natural upper eyelid crease
  • Puffy pouches of fat in the upper or lower eyelids

Your Procedure

Dr. Orringer will perform your blepharoplasty at the state-of-the-art Summit Surgical Center. Anesthesia is usually a combination of local with intravenous sedation. However, if your eyelid surgery is performed in conjunction with a brow lift or a facelift, general anesthesia is used. Regardless, a physician anesthesiologist is in attendance.

During your procedure, Dr. Orringer may remove excess skin and fat from your upper and lower eyelids in order to potentially achieve a more youthful, refreshed appearance. You may start to notice an overall improvement in appearance within 5-7 days. However, results tend to become more apparent for at least several months to a year.

Blepharoplasty FAQs

Is blepharoplasty performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both?

Blepharoplasty in Beverly HillsDepending on the patient's needs, surgery may be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty may address redundant skin or fullness that gives the eyelids a hooded appearance. Lower eyelid surgery is often performed to improve puffiness caused by fat pads or to address loose skin. Some patients benefit from treating both areas for a more balanced outcome. Dr. Orringer will recommend the most appropriate approach based on a detailed examination.

How long is the recovery period after eyelid surgery?

Initial healing usually occurs over the course of one to two weeks, though individual experiences may vary. Some swelling and bruising are expected initially, but tend to resolve gradually. Most patients feel comfortable resuming social or professional activities within 10 to 14 days. Dr. Orringer provides detailed aftercare instructions and closely monitors the healing process through scheduled follow-up appointments.

What is the difference between blepharoplasty and a brow lift?

While blepharoplasty addresses the eyelids directly, a brow lift focuses on the forehead and eyebrow position. In some cases, a heavy brow may contribute to the appearance of upper eyelid fullness, and Dr. Orringer evaluates this closely. If appropriate, a brow lift may be discussed in combination with or instead of upper blepharoplasty, depending on what is contributing to the overall appearance.

Is eyelid surgery only for cosmetic reasons?

Not necessarily. In some individuals, excess upper eyelid skin may extend far enough to interfere with the natural visual field. In such cases, eyelid surgery may be considered to improve functional concerns in addition to aesthetics. Dr. Orringer evaluates both cosmetic and anatomical considerations to determine the most appropriate course of treatment.

How does aging affect the eyelid area over time?

With age, the skin around the eyes may gradually lose elasticity, and fat pads can shift or become more prominent. This process may contribute to the appearance of puffiness, sagging skin, or a tired expression. These changes are often gradual and vary by individual, but when they become more pronounced, eyelid surgery may be considered as part of a broader rejuvenation plan.

Will there be visible scarring after eyelid surgery?

Dr. Orringer places his external incisions for blepharoplasty within natural eyelid creases and contours. As healing progresses, the incision lines typically become less noticeable.

Can blepharoplasty be combined with other procedures?

Yes, in some cases, eyelid surgery may be performed in conjunction with other facial procedures, such as a brow lift or facelift. This approach may be considered when multiple areas of facial aging are being addressed. Dr. Orringer designs each surgical plan carefully to maintain balance and avoid an overtreated appearance.
